Uruguay Hopeful After Win

(bleacherreport.com)
Montevideo, Uruguay - Uruguay remains hopeful to make it past the group stage after being the only team from Group D to win their friendly match on Wednesday.  Both Italy and England were held to draws, while Uruguay topped Slovenia 2-0.

Without star striker Luis Suárez, the Uruguayan side still had a very strong showing against Slovenia.  Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani showed that even without Suarez, Uruguay can still produce goals.

Uruguay scored their first goal in the 37th minute after a fantastic through-ball by veteran, Diego Forlán, found the head of Cavani to beat the Slovenian keeper.

The Uruguayans extended their lead late in the second half with a goal from Christian Stuani.  The second half substitute, and Espanyol forward, cleaned up a seemingly broken play to extend the lead to two goals.

Despite the final scoreline, the Uruguayan defense did not go untested.  Uruguayan keeper, Fernando Muslera, was in outstanding form.

Muslera made several stops to keep a clean sheet.  Along with being the only team from Group D to win on Wednesday, Uruguay was also the only team to not concede a goal.

Wednesday's win extends Uruguay's win streak to two consecutive matches, and extends their unbeaten streak to six.

Given that Uruguay was able to achieve this result without front-man Suárez, is a huge confidence boost as they prepare to head to Brazil.

Uruguay will play their first match of the World Cup on June 14, against Costa Rica.
