Germany Wins on Magnificent Goal

(time.com)

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Germany has now joined the select few teams to have won four World Cups after Sunday's victory at the Maracana. Mario Götze's extra time goal, gave Germany their first World Cup title since 1990.

It seemed from the early minutes that the match could go in favor of either side, with Argentina producing as many chances as Germany. Argentina missed an excellent opportunity after a poor back pass by Germany led to a one-on-one opportunity that Gonzalo Higuain was unable to convert.

Germany also had many chances at the hands of Thomas Muller and Miroslav Klose, who now holds the record for most World Cup goals ever, but were unable to score in regulation.

Klose, at 36, did not go the full 90 minutes and was subbed off in favor of Götze. It seemed that even with all the tactical changes made by both sides that the match may go to Penalty Kicks.

However, Götze managed to break the deadlock in the 113th minute of the match. A fantastic volley across the face of goal beat the Argentine keeper, giving Germany the lead that would ultimately win them the Cup.

Despite Götze's late goal, Argentina pushed forward all the way until the final whistle. Though Lionel Messi and company were unable to find the back of the net, Argentina put on a very good performance.
